Filler Removal

SKINLIFE’s Expertise in Filler Removal

SKINLIFE holds the proud title of being Galderma Presidential Champion for 4 consecutive years in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 which is the highest recognition awarded to the clinic that has provided the largest volume of aesthetic injectables including Restylane® fillers, Dysport® botulinum toxin, and Sculptra® filler each year in entire Canada. For a single injector clinic like SKINLIFE, achieving the top volume status is a remarkable feat on its own merit and also means that all of the knowledge is with one provider. Medical research confirms that when doctors and institutions perform procedures more frequently, they do so with greater skill and improved safety. While the case volume is certainly not the only factor of consideration when selecting one’s cosmetic injector, SKINLIFE believes this may be an indicator of the level of skills and knowledge behind our filler related services. Our filler removal services are grounded firmly on in-depth anatomical knowledge and extensive clinical experience. SKINLIFE continually invests in the integration of sophisticated filler removal techniques for an atraumatic, and precise removal of unwanted filler; in late 2017, we have begun breaking new ground by developing and providing filler injections as well as filler removals under ultrasound guidance for enhanced accuracy and safety.
Enhanced with ultrasound imaging technology, SKINLIFE offers highly sophisticated filler removal services for an aesthetically and medically optimal result. SKINLIFE has been presented with various needs for the reversal of existing fillers, for reasons including but not limited to:
  • Unsatisfactory results from inappropriate injection
  • Use of improper or unauthorized product(s)
  • Migration of filler
  • Excessive injection
  • Infection
  • Foreign body reaction
  • Delayed hypersensitivity reaction
  • Desire for a different shape
  • Filler removal prior to plastic surgery
  • Management of ischemia and skin necrosis caused by filler injection

Ultrasound Guided Filler Removal

SKINLIFE’s use of ultrasound imaging system allows clear visualization of previously injected filler before and during the removal process. With typical removal process, the location and depth of the preexisting filler placement by the previous injector can only be approximated and the exact positions of critical anatomical structures surrounding the filler remains unclear. The new ability to identify filler and adjacent anatomical features in real time allows for ultra-precise removal of the filler and results in the least trauma, maximum safety, and a dramatically increased chance of complete removal.

Common Removal Methods
  • Enzyme (Hyaluronidase) Injection: This enzyme injection is used when removing filler that consists of 100% Hyaluronic Acid (e.g. Juvederm, Teosyal, Restylane, Stylage). With ultrasound guidance, the smallest amount of enzyme is precisely injected to the unwanted filler.  Thus unnecessary infiltration of normal tissue is avoided.
  • Aspiration: This is a preferred removal method for semi-permanent or permanent fillers and hyaluronic acid filler with significant granulomatous tissue. Aspiration is a cosmetically superior alternative to drainage or excision. Ultrasound guided removal allows precise removal of permanent and semi-permanent filler. First the target filler is visualized with the ultrasound system. The removal pathway is planned to avoid critical anatomical structures and to maximally recover the filler.
  • Drainage: This method is typically reserved for filler that has formed an infected abscess. Infected filler is drained through an incision. The drainage pathway is left open to allow additional drainage, after which the wound heals by secondary intention.
  • How soon can I see the result? How long does it last?

The results of filler removal can be seen as early as the same day. Depending on the removal methods, it may take a few days to several days for swelling to subside. As the swelling decrease, the final result from filler removal becomes clear.

  • Is there any downtime following the removal?

The downtime may include possible bruising and/or swelling, the degree of which varies between patient to patient and between various removal methods. Generally most patients are able to resume daily activities shortly after treatment, if not immediately following injections.
